A Guide to Living in Richmond

Richmond lies within the Fort Bend County section of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area and is, despite being one of the smaller cities in the area, the county seat. The 2010 United States Census population of Richmond was 11,679, with a total area of 3.9 square miles.

Major Attractions

The Parks Department maintains George Park, comprised of 10 baseball fields, 12 soccer fields, 4 softball fields, 2 sand volleyball areas, a football field, and jogging trail, in addition to concessions and a pavilion.

George Ranch Historical Park, open Tuesday through Saturday, offers a glimpse into 100 years of Texas history. The park offers tours, and has annual public events such as “Tales of Texas,” an event showcasing Texans who have helped shape the state, and “Texian Market Days,” a large festival including craft vendors and live entertainment.

The Gordon Ranch is a 112-acre ranch with three playgrounds, two swimming pools, paddleboats, hayrides, obstacle courses, a petting zoo, and more. With an open-air amphitheater and four open-air pavilions to compliment the miniature golf course, there is something for everyone at Gordon Ranch.

Companies

The close proximity to both Houston and the booming industry of Sugar Land leads the majority of Richmond residents to work outside of the community, commuting to the larger cities for work.

Allied Concrete, a family-owned business established in 1954 that provides services for an impressive array of construction projects in Houston and the surrounding area has sales representatives in the Richmond area. Oak Bend Medical Center, which houses a large number of specialized medical departments and the offices of several physicians’ practices is a major employer in the Richmond area.

Churches and Places of Worship

Calvary Episcopal Church, located on Thompson Road, has a variety of children’s, youth, and outreach ministries. In addition to weekly services, sacraments, and worship ministries, Calvary hosts a Vacation Bible School, a nursery, outreach programs focused on helping others, and even hosts Boy and Girl Scout troops.

St. John Fisher Catholic Church is a parish of 900 families, celebrating community and faith on Clay Street. The home of Knights of Columbus Council #12632 and a branch of Guadalupanas Society, St. John Fisher also supports St. Vincent de Paul Society’s food pantry, and ministers to homebound parishioners, involving themselves in both the Richmond and Rosenberg communities.

Faith United Methodist Church holds two services each Sunday morning, in addition to the many outreach programs they provide. Ministries range from support programs for cancer patients and their family members, sports ministries, and hosting a Cub Scout troop.

Richmond students that attend public school are served by the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. Seven elementary schools, Austin Elementary, Long Elementary, McNeill Elementary, Seguin Elementary, Smith Elementary and Velasquez Elementary are located in Richmond and serve young students there. Childcare Options

The small community of Richmond offers a variety of childcare options for busy families, including both small and large daycare centers of both religious or non-sectarian affiliation, preschools and private early education centers that offer extended hours to meet the needs of working parents. We understand that some families determine that their needs would be best met through private, in-home care but aren’t eager to face the sometimes-overwhelming prospect of searching through dozens of applicants, arranging and conducting in-person interviews and navigating the complex waters of thorough background checks that are compliant with state and Federal employment laws. That’s why we’re excited to offer our services to Richmond families, providing top-notch care through highly-qualified, pre-screened nannies that are carefully matched to your preferences and specifications.
