A Guide to Living in Sugar Land

Sugar Land, one of the fastest-growing and most affluent cities in the state of Texas, grew more than 158 percent during the 2000 and 2010 United States Census period, with 46.24 percent job growth. The population, as estimated by the United States Census Bureau, is 84,511 with a median family income of $113,261 each year and a median home price of $369,600.

Major Attractions

Attractions in Sugar Land are as varied as the residents themselves, and include an assortment of activities that appeal to the athletic and outdoors enthusiasts.

The Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex hosts Friday Night Live! skating events, offers ice skating classes to beginners and presents live performances like The Traditional Nutcracker on Ice each year.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science maintains a satellite campus in Sugar Land, with exhibits detailing earth science, planetary and aerospace science, the importance of conservation, life sciences and featuring interactive exhibits like the Dig Pit, a mock archaeological dig for the remains of prehistoric creatures.

Sugar Land Memorial Park, with more than two miles of paths for walking, jogging and biking, two picnic pavilions, restroom buildings, a playground, dog park and mountain bike trail is merely the first phase of what will eventually become a 420-acre park along the Brazos River. First Colony Park features a 3,000-square-foot conference center, nine baseball fields, seven of which are lighted, batting cages, concession stands, drinking fountains, picnic areas, grills and a playground.

Companies

While Sugar Land lies only a short distance from Houston and many residents choose to commute into the larger city each day, there are also a few major corporations in the area that provide a significant portion of the local employment.

Imperial Sugar‘s corporate headquarters are in Sugar Land, and once housed a primary sugar refinery and distribution center there. This heritage gave Sugar Land both its name and the logo within its city seal.

CVR Energy, Incorporated maintains their national headquarters in Sugar Land, and is the city’s only resident 2012 Fortune 500 company. The independent petroleum refiner and fuel marketer contributes significantly to Sugar Land’s local economy.

Nalco Holding Company, a subsidiary of Ecolab, Incorporated that supplies water, air and energy improvement systems for industrial and institutional applications has a major manufacturing center located in Sugar Land, as well.

Churches and Places of Worship

Sugar Creek Baptist Church, located at 13333 Southwest Freeway in Sugar Land, provides visitors with information regarding the church through the Next Step Center across from the Worship Center, allowing newcomers to learn as much as they’d like about the church on their first visit. Ministries include Bible Fellowship, Adult Bible Fellowship groups, Children’s, Students’, College, Adults’, Missions, Pastoral Care, Worship and Creative Arts and Creative Communications.

Christ United Methodist Church has volunteers waiting in the Welcome Center, located inside the Gathering Hall, every Sunday in order to greet newcomers, answer questions and provide any necessary assistance. Ministry programs include small groups, Children, Youth, Adults, Older Adults, Missions, Music and Fine Arts and Outreach programs.

St. Theresa Catholic Church, located at 705 St. Theresa Boulevard in Sugar Land, hosts a variety of programs and activities open to the community as a whole, regardless of faith, along with traditional liturgical and confessional services.

Schools

The Fort Bend Independent School District serves almost all of Sugar Land. clements High School and Stephen F. Austin High School have been listed among the top 10 high schools in all of Texas by Texas Monthly magazine.

Faith Lutheran School, a private coed school of Lutheran affiliation with a total enrollment of 127 students from preschool through eighth grade is located at 800 Brooks Street in Sugar Land. The student to teacher ratio is 11.2:1, 17.9% higher than the national average for private institutions.

Fort Bend Baptist Academy, a coed private institution with a total enrollment of 770 students from preschool through twelfth grade is affiliated with the Baptist doctrine. The student to teacher ratio at Fort Bend Baptist Academy is 12.8:1, 34.7% higher than the national average.

Cambridge Montessori School in Sugar Land serves a total of 99 children from preschool through second grade, emphasizing the Montessori style of early learning in a non-sectarian environment. The student to teacher ratio at Cambridge Montessori is 4.6:1, 51.6% lower than the national average for private schools.

The Honor Roll School in Sugar Land is a non-sectarian, coed private school serving 667 students from preschool through eighth grade. The student to teacher ratio at The Honor Roll School is 13.5:1, 42.1% higher than the national average.

Standardized Test Scores

Students attending classes through the Fort Bend Independent School District from third through eleventh grades scored on a par with or slightly above the state average on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. In no area were the schools below the state average standards.
